Kameoka Exchange Center Global Session

Though my weekends are normally filled up solely with lifting, internet, or lazing about, occasionally I do get out to do some fun stuff. This Saturday for instance, I got the chance to take part in the Kameoka Exchange Center’s Global Session, a monthly English discussion series. Lead by one guest presenter (myself) and one coordinator, the Global Session gives Japanese folks a chance to practice their English in an open discussion style setting. The guest presenter writes a one or two page article on anything of their choice, and then everybody talks about it freely. Topics so far have included the role of technology in the modern world, adult language education, and attitudes toward education in America and Japan.

Not wanting to break the string of serious discussion topics, I settled on writing about how stereotypes in media can affect people’s perceptions. In particular I wanted to discuss how portrayals of Japanese in American media and foreigners in Japanese media have the effect of making both groups seem more “foreign” to the other. What this means is that, in my opinion, is that the constant portrayals of Japanese as martial artists, ninja masters, and honorable samurai tend to add to the American stereotype of Japan as a country and people that are inherently different than Americans. This can add to the bias that many Japanese and Asian American communities are somehow less American than other groups.

Similarly, foreign characters in Japanese media are often portrayed as being unable to speak Japanese or understand the culture, which can help strengthen the stereotype that foreigners are clueless about Japanese language and culture. What both of these stereotypes do is cause what Dr. Frank Wu terms “perpetual foreigner syndrome,” a situation where a group of people, for example Japanese-Americans, are, regardless of how their history or upbringing, are always considered foreign, separate from the rest of the population.

Despite the tough topic, nearly everyone was really eager to talk, and people seemed really interested in the topic. Lots of opinions were thrown around, but the discussion was actually very enlightening. I often forget that I too tend to think things like, “all Japanese love this,” “Japanese people always do this.” or “figures a Japanese person would do that.” It is important after all to see people for who they are as an individual.
